When the British king, Charles 11, visited St. John''s College,
Oxford, England, he asked whether he could have a certain por-
trait of Charles I, but the college demurred.
"I will grant you any favor in return," said Charles. "In that
case," said the college, "it is yours."
"Thank you," said the king, "and what is your request?"
"Give it back, please," they said.
He did, and the portrait is still in the college library.

옥스퍼드의 세인트 존스대학을 방문한 영국왕 찰스2세는 찰스1세의
초상화를 보고는 그것을 줄수없겠는가고 물었다. 그런데 대학측은 그
청을 거역했다. "그 대신 어떤 청이라도 들어주겠어요"라고 왕은 말했
다. "그러시다면 드리겠습니다"라고 대학당국이 밝혔다. "고마워요. 한
데 청은 뭐요?" "제발 돌려주십시오"라고 당국자들은 말했다. 왕은 청
을 받아들였다. 그래서 그 초상화는 지금도 그 대학 도서관에 걸려있다.
