A frenchman on a walking tour of England met an old farmer
who told him that the next town was only 5 miles away when, in
fact, it was 15. When they met again, the Frenchman complained
of the deception. "I only did it," said the farmer, "to spur
you on." "The French wouldn''t fool a man like that," the visi-
tor said. "They don''t think enough of a man to lie to him."

지는 5마일밖에 안 된다고 했다. 실제로는 15마일이었다. 후일 다시만
나자 프랑스사람은 그사실에 대해 항의했다. "난 당신을 북돋워주려고
했을 뿐인데"라고 농부는 말했다. "프랑스사람같으면 그런식으로 남을
속이지 않습니다"라고 여행자는 항변했다. "그사람들이야 어디 거짓말
을 해가면서까지 남을 생각해주려고 한답니까"
