The woman stood in an American judge''s office to be interviewed prior to naturalization proceedings.

As requested, she had brought two citizens as witnesses, one of whom happened to be the local sheriff.

"And," boomed the judge from his bench, as he turned to the law-enforcement officer, "can you vouch as to the honest character of this young lady?"

An embarrassing silence followed.

Then the sheriff replied, "Well, Your Honor, she has never been in my jail."

요구되는 바와 같이 시민 두 사람을 증인으로 데리고 갔는데 그중 한 사람은 그 고장 보안관이었다.

"그래 이 여자의 정직성을 보증할 수 있다는 말인가" 하고 판사는 보안관에게 윽박질렀다.

잠시 어색한 침묵이 이어지고 나서 보안관이 대답했다.

"글쎄 올시다. 이 여자는 저의 감옥에 갖혔던 일은 없습니다"
