Oliver Wendell Holmes used to tell about the time all the people of the world decided to shout “Boo!” at the same time, so that the great shout could be heard on the moon. But when the time came for the great world shout there was nothing but spectacular silence. Everyone was so anxious to hear that great sound that everyone remained quiet.

올리버 웬들 홈스는 세상 사람 모두가 같은 순간에 일제히 “부우”하고 외쳐서 그 소리가 달까지 미치도록 하면 어떻게 될까라는 이야기를 자주 하곤 했다. 정작 온 세상 사람이 일제히 소리를 지르기로 한 그 순간이 되자 세상은 쥐죽은 듯이 조용하더라는 것이다. 너나 할 것 없이 모두가 그 엄청난 소리를 귀담아들으려고 숨을 죽이고 있었단다.
