A man had a habit of grumbling at the food his wife placed before him at family meals． Then he would ask the blessing．
One day after his usual combination of complaint and prayer， his little girl asked， “Daddy， does God hear us when we pray？”
“Why， of course，” he replied． “He hears us every time we pray．”
She pauses on this a moment， and asked， “Does he hear everything we say the rest of the time？”
“Yes， dear， every word，” he replied， encouraged that he had inspired his daughter to be curious about spiritual matters． However， his pride was quickly turned to humility．．．
“Then which does God believe？”

집에서 식사할 때마다 아내가 식탁에 올리는 음식에 대해 불평을 하곤 하는 남자가 있었다. 그렇게 불평을 늘어놓고 나서는 하느님의 은총을 비는 기도를 하는 것이었다．
하루는 그가 여느 때처럼 불평을 늘어놓고 나서 감사기도를 하자 어린 딸이 물었다.

“아빠, 하느님은 우리가 기도할 때 하는 소리를 들으시는 거야？”
“그럼, 물론 들으시지. 우리가 기도할 적마다 하는 말을 들으신단다.”

딸애는 잠시 머뭇거리더니 다시 물었다. “우리가 기도하지 않을 때 하는 소리도 죄다 들으셔？”

“그럼, 빠짐없이 들으신단다”

아버지는 자기가 딸애에게 영적 문제에 관심을 갖도록 자극한 것이라는 생각으로 좋아하면서 대답했다．

그러나 딸의 다음 질문으로 그의 프라이드는 곧 겸허한 마음으로 바뀌었다．

“그렇다면 하느님은 그런 두 가지 말 가운데 어느 쪽을 믿으셔？”
