As a new employee of a natural－gas company， the young man made a point of being outgoing and learning the ropes. One day he squeezed into a crowded elevator， which deposited workers on every floor as it went up. Finally， just one man and he were left. Trying to be friendly， he quipped， "It sure takes a while to get to the top， doesn't it?" He gave the young man a wry smile.

Later he was told he has directed his comment to the chairman of the board.



천연가스 회사에 새로 입사한 청년은 사교성을 살리면서 요령을 잘 익히기로 마음 먹었다. 하루는 만원 엘리베이터에 비집고 들어갔는데 승강기는 층층마다 멈춰 서서 직원들을 부려놓으면서 올라갔다. 마침내 다른 한 사람과 단 둘이 되었다. "꼭대기까지 올라가는 데 정말 한참 걸리는 군요. " 청년은 붙임성 있게 굴어 보려고 그렇게 빈정거리는 소리를 했다. 그 사람은 쓴웃음을 지어보이는 것이었다.

나중에야 청년은 그렇게 빈정대는 소리를 들은 상대가 회사 이사장이라는 사실을 알게 되었다.
