▶ Rule 9 : 수식어를 정확하게 사용하라.

영작문에서는 종종 문장 내 단어 하나의 위치가 다른 단어들과의 관계를 형성하기도 한다.

특히 대명사와 같은 수식어들은 가장 가까운 곳에 위치한 단어와 연결된다.

다음의 예를 잘 보면 수식어절이 문장 내에서 적절한 위치에 놓여지지 않을 때 애매모호한 결과를 가져오게 된다.

Incorrect : Cheung and Martha sat talking about the movie in the office.

Incorrect : They wondered how much the house was really worth when they bought it.

위의 모호함을 피하기 위해서는 수식어들을 수식되는 단어들에 가장 가까운 곳에 위치해야만 한다.

Correct : Cheung and Martha sat in the office talking about the movie.

Correct : When they bought the house，the wondered how much it was really worth.

수식어는 반드시 수식되는 단어의 가장 가까운 곳에 위치해야만 하며，수식어의 반대편에 다른 지시물은 올 수가 없다.

Correct : The dentist instructed him to brush his teeth regularly.

Correct : Tom said he had a map of New Jersey in the car.

The day of the independent craftsman，working alone，is long past.

Now，almost all serious activity requires team effort.

Doctors must work in teams to treat patients.

Engineers must work in teams to design autos and aircraft.

Construction workers must work in teams to put up buildings.

Office work of every kind is teamwork.

It seems clear to say，then，that it is more important to be able to work with a group of people on a team than to work independently.

Here is an example from the world of art.

The artist is supposed to be a loner.

We think of the artist as a solitary figure，working all alone to paint a portrait，carve a sculpture，or whatever.

Just as often，however，even the artist is part of a team.

A work of art may be very much a team effort.

One person may prepare materials: another person may transport the materials to a studio.

The studio itself may be，in fact，an office，with a computer specialist，a receptionist，and many other team members working together.

In conclusion，very few of us ever work alone.

Even when we work unsupervised at our desks，we are part of a team.

We may not work directly with every other member of the team at every moment，but the team remains more important than the individual.
