One day Mary fell in with a thumbnail-hitting carpenter who had
put up a wooden shelf in her house.

"I say!" she said.

"Do you remember the shelf you put in my house the other day?"

Yes," the would-be carpenter replied. "What''s about it?"

"Well, it gave away and crashed down."

"Oh, did it?" said the carpenter.

"So, you put something on it, eh?"

어느날 메리는 그의 집에 나무선반을 달아준 풋내기 목수와 우연히
마주쳤다.

"이봐요. 일전에 우리 집에 선반을 달아줬잖아요?" 하고 메리가 말을
건넸다.

"그랬었죠. 한데 그게 어때서요?" 하고 풋내기 목수는 물었다.

"그게 힘이 없어서 폭삭 내려 앉았지 뭐예요"

"그랬어요? 그러니까 거기다가 물건을 얹었더란 말인가요?" 하고
목수는 물었다.
