The men in the regiment were not at all interested in signing
up for the very liberal life insurance the government was will-
ing to write on the soldiers. The colonel of the regiment finally
asked a sergeant, who had great influence with the men, to talk
to them about the life insurance. The sergeant''s talk went like
this:
"Now about this insurance-where the government has to pay out
$ 10,000 every time an insured soldier is killed. It doesn''t cost
a cent when a man who is not insured is killed.
Now stop and figure it out: What soldiers are going to be sent
into the front lines-the soldiers who are insured, or the men who
are not insured?"
The entire regiment signed up for insurance.

으나 어느 연대는 이에대해 전혀 흥미를 보이지 않았다. 마침내 연대장
은 사병들 사이에서 인기가 대단했던 하사관을 불러 보험가입을 독려해
보라고 했다. 하사관은 다음과 같이 이야기를 전개했다.
"이거 보험이야기인데, 여기에 가입한 군인이 죽으면 그때마다 정부는
1만달러를 지불해야 한다구. 가입하지않은 사람이 죽었을때엔 정부는 한
푼도 내지 않아. 자아 어디 잘 생각해 보라구. 보험에 든 사람하고 안든
사람하고 어느쪽을 일선으로 내보내려 들겠냐 말이야"
연대원 전원이 가입했다.
