서울(Seoul).외국인들에게는 발음하기 쉽지 않은 이름이다.

소울이라고 해야할지 세울이라고 해야할지.한국 사람들의 발음을 들어보고 흉내내 보지만 어딘지 정확하지 않은 것 같은 느낌이 든다.

발음하기 어려운 이름처럼 서울은 다양한 모습으로 비쳐져 한마디로 정의하기 어려운 도시다.

1998년 여름 서울이란 도시를 처음 만나고 10년간의 변화를 함께 경험했지만 나는 아직도 서울을 잘 모른다.

나는 대부분의 시간을 사무실이 있는 서울과 본사가 위치한 창원에서 보낸다.

두 곳 다 정겹지만 가족들과 함께 살고 있는 서울이 어찌보면 내게는 또 다른 고향이다.

이방인이 경험한 지난 10년 동안 서울에는 크고 작은 변화들이 있었다.

내가 느끼는 가장 큰 변화는 고층아파트가 눈에 띄게 늘어났다는 점이다.

10년 전에도 서울에는 아파트가 많았다.

강을 건널 때 즐비하게 늘어서 있는 아파트들이 인상적이었는데，요즘은 여기저기 초고층 아파트가 시내를 가득 채우고,새로 건축중인 아파트들도 하루가 다르게 솟아 오르고 있다.

서울은 아파트 도시란 생각이 든다.

또 다른 서울의 변화는 도심 속 휴식공간이 늘고 갖가지 문화공연이 활발해졌다는 점이다.

10년 전 서울은 서구국가에 비해 문화 및 편의 시설이 적은 듯했다.

시내에는 바쁘게 움직이는 사람들만 보일 뿐 점심 시간에 산책할 공원도，쉬어갈 공간도 드물었다.

하지만 요즘 서울 시내에 나가보면 도심 중앙을 흐르는 청계천을 중심으로 펼쳐진 휴식 공간도 보이고,시청앞의 잔디밭도 보여 여유로워진 모습이다.

또 멀티플렉스 영화관도 많아졌고，공연장 전시장 등이 곳곳에 생겨 다양한 문화생활의 기회가 늘어나고 있다.

서울의 변화와 함께 꼭 얘기하고 싶은 것은 한강이다.

유유히 흐르는 강물과 한강을 가로지르는 다리들은 다른 어떤 도시보다도 인상적이다.

특히 밤이면 형형색색의 불빛으로 치장하는 한강 다리 야경을 보고 있노라면 서울이란 도시가 정말 변화무쌍하고 매력적이란 사실을 새삼 깨닫게 된다.

한남동 볼보그룹코리아 사무실은 창밖으로 남산이 내다보여 계절의 변화를 잘 느끼게 한다.

어느 나라에나 그 나라를 대표하는 국제적인 도시가 있다.

그 도시가 전통을 보여주는 것이든，문화적인 것이든 그 도시만의 색깔로 사람들의 마음을 사로잡는다.

이제 서울도 세계 어디에 내놓아도 당당한 도시의 모습을 갖춰 가고 있다.

아름다운 자연환경으로，숨겨진 전통으로,발전과 성장의 모습으로 다채로운 얼굴을 가진 서울이 세계적 도시로 발전해가길 기대해 본다.

Living in Seoul

Seoul.Seoul is not easy for foreigners to pronounce. Is it 'So－wool' or 'Se－wool'？ I sometimes try to imitate my Korean friends' articulation but it still sounds somewhat incorrect. Like its hard to pronounce name， Seoul is a city with a number of different faces and hard to clearly define. Even though it has been 10 years since I met the city Seoul for the first time in 1998， I think I still don't know Seoul well.

I spent most of my time in Korea in Seoul where my office is and in Changwon where Volvo Group Korea's headquarters is located. I feel intimacy with both cities but Seoul can be called as my second home town as I live here with my family. There has been many changes to Seoul， large and small， for last 10 years that a stranger experienced.

One of the biggest and most visible changes in Seoul is the increasing number of highriser apartments. Even 10 years ago， there were many apartment buildings in Seoul. And the apartment complexes lining up along the Han River coasts was impressive. However， super high apartment buildings are all over the city and new buildings are rising up everyday in these days. If you drive along the riverside expressway from the airport to Hannam－Dong， you can see skyscraping apartments soaring up through office buildings in Yoi－do and some have very attractive view. Seoul seems to be a city of apartments.

On the other hand， increasing leisure and rest spaces including Chonggyechon and more frequent cultural events and performances like musicals， plays and exhibitions are another change of Seoul. 10 years ago， Seoul appeared to lack culture and convenience facilities compared with western cities. You could see only busy people， but not many parks to stroll through or spaces to take a rest in. But now Seoul shows a lot more comfortable look with promenades and spaces along Chonggyechon， as well as a large green lawn in front of the City Hall. Also， numerous movie theaters， concert halls， and galleries have been built all over the city and provides opportunities to enjoy cultural life.

Regarding Seoul's change， one thing that I don't want to fail to mention is the Han River. The slowly flowing water and bridges crossing the river leaves deeper impression of Seoul to visitors than any other city. Particularly， the bridges wearing a variety of lightings at night reminds me how dynamic and attractive the city of Seoul is. I also can feel the change of seasons as Volvo Group Korea is located in Hannam－dong and I can see Namsan Mountain through my window. A city with a beautiful river and beautiful mountains， it's Seoul

Any country has a city that represents the nation. It can show the tradition of the country， or it can have cultural uniqueness. Whatever it is， it fascinates people with its own color. Now Seoul is a city that can compete with any city in the world， with many faces including beautiful natural environment， hidden tradition， and development and growth. I hope this wonderful city to keep growing as the city that leads the world.
