With the economy in terrible shape, by far the most important issue
for the political candidates was economy.

The candidate who was running to unseat the incumbent congressman
took his rival to task for his role in spoiling the economy.

"You must remember," said the challenger in his campaign speech,
"that he is an unrivalled genius in coming up with the most scandalous
way of squandering taxpayers'' money.

When they had an appropriation of several hundred million dollars to
spend, this man proposed to build a bridge over the Mississippi River,
lengthwise!"

경제가 엉망이었으므로 출마자들이 다뤄야 할 가장 중요한 문제는 단연코
경제였다.

현직 국회의원에 도전한 후보는 그 의원이 경제를 망치는데 한몫했다고
힐난했다.

선거연설에서 그는 이렇게 말했다.

"여러분은 이걸 아셔야 합니다.

그는 납세자들의 돈을 탕진할 언어도단의 방법을 궁리해내는데 있어서 타의
추종을 불허하는 천재적 머리를 가진 사람입니다.

몇억달러의 예산이 남아돌자 그는 미시시피강을 따라가면서 길게 다리를
놓자고 했습니다"
