Chairman Irving S. Olds of the U.S. Steel Corporation was presiding over a stockholders meeting, when a woman arose and asked him: “Exactly what are the duties of chairman: what do you do?”

Mr. Olds, without batting an eye, said: “Madam, the chairman of the board is roughly equivalent to the parsley on a platter of fish.”

US스틸의 회장이었던 어빙 올즈가 주주총회를 진행시키고 있었는데 여자 주주 한 사람이 자리에서 일어나더니 회장에게 물었다. “정확하게 말해서 회장의 직무는 무엇입니까? 당신이 하는 일이 뭐냐고요?”

올즈는 눈 하나 깜짝하지 않고 답변했다.

“부인, 이사회의 이사장이란 한마디로 말해 생선요리에 장식용으로 곁들인 파슬리와도 같은 거랍니다.”
