The king was waving to his royal subjects from the balcony of the
palace when he spotted a beggar in the crowd who looked amazingly
like his royal self.

He had a guard bring the beggar to him.

The king knew that the king before him had a well-deserved
reputation as a ladies'' man as he did himself.

"Tell me," said the king smiling, "was your mother perhaps a servant
in the palace?"

"No, Your Highness," said the man, "but my father was."

궁전 발코니에서 신한들을 향해 손을 흔들던 임금은 그 군중속에서
놀랍도록 자신을 닮은 거지를 발견했다.

임금은 근위대원을 시켜 그 거지를 불러오게 했다.

임금은 자신처럼 선왕도 이름난 호색가였다는 사실을 익히 알고 있는
터였다.

"그대의 모친은 궁의 시녀였으렷다"하고 임금은 미소를 머금고 물었다.

"아니옵니다 폐하, 쇤네의 어머니가 아니오라 아버지가 궁의
시종이었사옵나이다"라고 그 사내는 대답했다.
