“Why did you steal?” the judge asked the old man who was charged with stealing a loaf of bread. “Being old, I’m unable to get a job. I was dying of starvation.” “Stealing is a sin. The law does not discriminate. Therefore, you are to be fined 10 dollars.” People watching the trial expected the judge to be lenient. “The theft by this old man is not only his responsibility. All of us share the responsibility, for they left him in difficulty. We are to be fined for 50 cents and myself 10 dollars.” He took $10 out of his wallet and put it in his hat. “Bailiff, collect fines.” The sum came to $57.50, which was given to the old man, who paid the fine and left the court with $47.50, shedding tears of apreciation.
