Dick Cavett, a noted American talk show host, once asked Father
Theodore Hesburgh, president of University of Notre Dame, if he thought
practicing birth control was a mortal sin.

"Mortal sin? I hope not," replied Hesburgh.

Cavett looked somewhat puzzled by the response coming from a man who
stood high in American Chatholicism that was adamantly against abortion.

"You see," added the prominent Catholic man, "I''ve been practicing it
for years."

미국의 유명한 토크쇼 진행디자인 디크 캐버트는 노터데임 대학의 총장인
디오더 헤스버그 신부에게 산아제한을 하는 것이 끔찍한 죄악이라고 생각
하느냐고 물은 적이 있었다.

"끔찍한 죄악이라구요? 아니겠지요"라고 헤스버그는 대답했다.

임신중절에 완강히 반대하는 미국 카톨릭계의 지도급인사로부터 그같은
대답을 들은 캐버트는 좀 어리둥절한 표정이었다.

"나는 오랫 동안 그걸 실천해왔거든요"라고 이 카톨릭계의 저명인사는
덧붙였다.
