British aid from the government is already helping to feed more than 2.4million people in the drought-stricken Horn of Africa region. The DEC is a charity that brings together 14 leading UK aid agencies, to raise funds when there is a major emergency in a poorer country overseas. The DEC appeal has already raised more than £72million in donations from the British public, but more funds are still needed.

영국 프리미어리그(EPL)가 최고경영자(CEO)를 구하기 위해 연봉을 높여줘야 할지를 고민하고 있다고 영국 파이낸셜타임스(FT)가 30일 보도했다.

앞서 프리미어리그는 2명의 후보에게 CEO 자리를 제안했으나 거절당했다. 미국 디스커버리에서 애니멀플래닛채널 사장을 맡고 있던 수재너 디니지는 지난해 11월 제안을 받았을 때 이를 수락, 처음으로 여성 수장이 될 예정이었으나 3주만에 별다른 설명 없이 마음을 바꿔 거절하겠다고 통보했다. 그 다음으로 물망에 오른 것은 BBC스튜디오즈의 CEO를 맡고 있던 팀 데이비였지만 역시 거절했다.

지난 19년간 이 자리를 맡아 온 리처드 스커더모어(60·사진)는 기본적으로 90만파운드(약 13억원), 여러 수당을 합한 패키지로는 250만파운드(약 36억5000만원)를 받았다. 이것도 적지 않은 금액이지만 자리에 걸맞는 후임자를 구하기엔 다소 부족한 금액이라는 것이 프리미어리그의 고민이다.

새 CEO 선정위원회를 이끌고 있는 브루스 벅 첼시 FC는 헤드헌팅회사 스펜서스튜어트와 함께 새 후보 리스트를 만들고 있는 중이다. 이 위원회에서는 아직 연봉 상향이 공식적으로 거론되고 있지는 않다. 하지만 영국 내 상위 팀 임원 중 한 명은 FT에 “(첫 후보군 리스트를 보고) 우리는 ‘연봉이 충분하지 않은데’라고 생각했다”고 전했다.

프리미어리그 CEO에 대한 연봉을 올려줘야 한다는 논거 중 하나는 그 자리가 FTSE100대 회사의 CEO 연봉이나 미국 스포츠리그 커미셔너 수준은 받아야 하는 자리라는 것이다. FTSE100 기업의 2017년 평균 연봉은 393만파운드(약 57억5000만원) 수준(CIPD 자료)이다. 미국 프로풋볼리그(NFL) 커미셔너인 로저 구델은 2017년에 5년 계약 연장을 하면서 연 4000만달러(약 447억원)씩 받기로 했다.
