필자의 사무실에는 큰 창문이 있다. 아침에 일찍 출근 후 창밖을 보면 서울의 활기찬 기운이 전해온다. 야트막한 남산과 웅장한 숭례문,인왕산 밑에 자리잡은 경복궁까지.서울 한복판에서 수백년된 문화 유산과 함께 하루를 시작할 수 있다는 것은 큰 영광이고 기쁨이다.

창문 너머로 웅장한 모습을 뽐내던 숭례문의 모습은 필자가 가장 좋아했던 전경이다. 그러나 지금 숭례문은 천막과 펜스에 가려진 채 외부인의 접근을 금하고 있다. 한국의 국보 1호인 숭례문이 올해 초 화재로 소실된 것은 정말 안타까운 사건이었다.

지난 몇 주간 필자의 양친이 영국에서 한국을 방문해 함께 휴가를 보낼 기회가 있었는데,필자처럼 한국의 다양한 전통문화 유산을 접하면서 그 단아한 멋과 아름다움에 놀라셨다.

주말 산중의 조용한 산사에 들를 때면 고요한 풍경소리와 함께 오색으로 수놓아진 아름다운 단청을 봤고,민속박물관에서는 바늘에 실을 꿰어 한 땀 한 땀 정성과 인내를 담아 곱고 정갈한 옷을 지었던 한복,서민들의 행복과 애환을 담고 있는 익살스러우면서도 소박한 민화,영롱한 빛을 발하면서도 격조있는 미를 표현하고 있는 나전칠기 등을 보면서 한국인의 삶에 담긴 심미안에 감탄했다. 필자의 부모님은 이번에 처음으로 한국의 문화유산을 만났다. 이렇게 멋진 한국의 전통문화가 세계적으로 많이 알려져 있지 않았다는 점과 한국 정부의 노력에도 문화재들에 대한 일반인의 관심이 점점 줄어 한국을 대표하는 문화재들이 대를 잇지 못해 사라질 위기에 처해있다는 안타까운 소식을 접하게 됐다.

우리 은행에서는 아름다운 한국 전통문화예술 작품들을 더 많은 사람들에게 알리고 더 많은 관심을 얻을 수 있었으면 하는 바람에서 작년에 이어 올해에도 서울시와 함께 전통예술인상을 시상했다. 그리고 봄부터 여름까지 은행 로비에서 서울시 무형문화재 작품 전시회도 열었다. 올해는 한글과 영문,일본어로 전통문화를 알리는 홈페이지를 만들어 한국의 멋진 전통문화에 대한 관심이 높아질 수 있도록 지원하는 일을 시작했다. 이 사이트를 통해 한국의 전통문화를 외국인들도 더 많이 접할 수 있길 기대한다.

지금도 사무실 창밖으로 보이는 숭례문은 천막 속에 모습을 감추고 있다. 숭례문이 멋진 모습으로 다시 태어나 그 웅장한 모습을 뽐낼 날을 기다려 본다. 한국은 숨기기엔 너무 아름다운 나라다.

In Reminiscence of Soongraemoon

I am lucky enough to have a large window in my office. I come to work early in the morning and am able to look outside and see and feel Seoul's vitality. It is sheer pleasure to start a day in the centre of Seoul watching all the people hurrying along surrounded by several hundred year-old traditional heritage such as Namsan， grand Soongraemun (Namdaemun)， and Gyoungbok Palace， the symbol of Chosun Dynasty， located in the vicinity of Inwangsan.

My favourite view was that of Soongraemun-right outside my office. That beautiful monument is now covered with a tent and blocked by fencing， prohibiting outsiders…. It was a terrible shame that Korea's number one treasure was burnt down early this year.

Seeing Koreans shedding tears in front of Soongraemun in the immediate aftermath of the destruction， holding a service for the rest of the departed soul for Soongraemun like they lost their own family， I could see how much Koreans loved their precious traditional inheritance.

I have been lucky to have my parents staying with me for the last few weeks on a holiday from England. Having visitors is a great excuse to re-visit favourite spots and show off Korea's beauty to foreigners. They， like me， were astounded by the elegance and the beauty of the historic treasures.

On weekends， when I pass by the temples in the mountain， I get to see the exquisite painting，'DANCHEONG' that is colored in clear five colors of blue， red， yellow， white， and， black under the roof with the calm tinkling of a wind-chime. Also， through the pieces of traditional cultural arts at the Folk Museum， I encounter the neat and tidy 'HANBOK' that people made by threading a needle with effort and patience， 'MINHWA'， the simple and humorous folk painting that depicts the common people's happiness， joys and sorrows， and 'LACQUERWARE' inlaid with mother-of-pearl and much more. I am deeply impressed with the aesthetic sense of Korean people.

My parents had only learned of what Korea has to offer by visiting me. It is such a pity that these great heritages are not well known to the world and to hear that some intangible cultural assets that represent Korea are being forgotten-despite the Korean government's efforts.

With the hope that Korea's beautiful traditional cultural art works would receive more attention， from last year， we started to recognize and award intangible cultural assets together with Seoul Metropolitan Government and to support the exhibitions of the award winning artistic pieces. In addition， a website in Korean， English， and Japanese was created to boost the interests toward Korea's fascinating traditional culture. Through this website， I hope that not only Koreans， but also foreigners would be able to encounter and appreciate Korea's traditional culture.

Currently， Soongraemun is still hiding itself in the tent. May Soongraemun be rebuilt and reveal its magnificent figure soon again! Korea is too beautiful a country to hide itself.
