The lawyer representing the railroad in a lawsuit filed by an old rancher， whose prize bull was missing from the section through which the railroad passed， tried to get the case settled out of court． He did his best and finally the rancher agreed to take half of what he was asking and received the check． The following day， the lawyer came across the rancher and couldn‘t resist gloating over his success．

”Frankly， I couldn‘t have won the case． The engineer was asleep when the train went through your ranch that morning． I bluffed you！” The old man replied， “Well， young man， I was worried about winning the case myself， because that damned bull came home later．”

기차가 지나가는 부근에서 제일 아끼는 황소가 없어지자 늙은 목장주인은 철도회사를 상대로 소송을 제기했는데 젊은 변호사는 법정 밖에서 타결을 보려고 애쓴 끝에 노인이 요구액의 반으로 합의를 보게 해서 수표를 건네줬다．

이튿날 노인과 마주친 젊은 변호사는 사건을 잘 타결지은 것이 어찌나 만족스러운지 저도 모르게 싱글벙글했다．

"솔직히 말해서 저로서는 승산이 없는 사건이었습니다. 차가 목장을 통과했을 때 기관사가 졸고 있었지 뭡니까. 그래서 노인장께 허세를 부렸던 겁니다."

그러자 노인이 대답했다．

"한데 젊은이, 나도 이길 수 있을까 걱정이었다네. 그 놈의 소가 나중에 돌아왔지 뭔가."
