One day a bachelor who was a poor tipper walked into his favorite
restaurant and ordered lunch.

A new waitress served his meal and received a three-cent tip.

When he came in the next day, she thanked him for his "generosity,"
and she said she could tell the character of a diner by the way he
tipped.

"Well, what could you tell about me?" he asked.

"You put three pennies in a neat row," said the waitress, "and that
shows you''re a very tidy person. The first penny tells me you''re frugal,
and the second tells me you''re a bachelor."

"That''s true," he agreed.

"But what does the third penny tell you?"

"It tells me your father was a bachelor, too"

팁에 인색한 독신남자가 단골식당에 가서 점심식사를 주문했다.

새로 온 여자종업원은 식사시중을 들어주고 팁으로 3센트를 받았다.

이튿날 그가 다시 나타나자 여자는 팁을 후하게 주니 고맙다면서 팁 주는
걸 보면 손님의 성품을 알 수 있다고 말했다.

"그럼 난 어때요?"라고 그는 물었다.

"1센트짜리 셋을 가지런히 내놓는 걸 보면 아주 깔끔한 분이에요. 첫 동전은
손님이 검소함을, 둘째 동전은 손님이 독신임을 말합니다"

"거 맞아요. 그럼 세째 동전은?"

"손님의 부친도 독신이었다는 사실을요"
