When I was styling an elderly client’s hair in the beauty shop where I worked, we started talking about old age.

“One of the biggest problems with growing old is having all your friends die,” she said. “Of course,” she added with a twinkle in her eye, “So do your enemies.”

내가 미장원에서 일하고 있었을 때 일이다. 한 할머니의 머리를 봐드리면서 이야기를 나눴는데 화제는 늙은이가 되는 일이었다.

“늙으면 큰 문제가 뭔고 하니, 뭐니 뭐니 해도 친구들이 하나 둘 죄다 내 곁을 떠나버리는 거더라고요.” 이렇게 말한 할머니는 윙크하면서 한마디 더 했다. “물론 웬수들도 가버렸지만 말야.”
