During an examination at Cambridge University a bright young student asked the proctor to bring him cakes and ale.The following dialog ensued. Proctor:"I beg your pardon？" Student: "I request that you bring me cakes and ale." Proctor: "Sorry，no."

At this point,the student produced a copy of the 400-year-old Laws of Cambridge,written in Latin and still nominally in effect,and pointed to the section which read: "Gentlemen sitting examinations may request cakes and ale." Pepsi and hambugers were judged the modern equivalent，and the student sat there, writing his examination and happily slurping away.Three weeks later the student was fined five pounds for not wearing a sword to the examination.

케임브리지대학 시험시간에 머리가 좋은 한 학생이 시험관을 보고 케이크와 에일(술)을 갖다달라고 했다. 그러자 다음과 같은 대화로 이어졌다. 시험관:"뭐라고？" 학생:"케이크와 에일을 갖다 주기 바랍니다. " 시험관:"미안하지만 그럴 수는 없네." 그러자 학생은 400년이나 된 케케묵은 것이지만 명색으로는 여전히 효력이 있는，라틴어로 된 케임브리지 교칙을 내보이면서 다음 대목을 지적했다. "응시 중인 신사는 케이크와 에일을 요구할 수도 있다. " 그리하여 현대식으로 펩시와 햄버거가 그것을 대신할 수 있는 것으로 해서 제공되자 학생은 신이 나서 먹고 마시면서 답안을 써 내려갔다. 그런데 3주 후 그에겐 5파운드의 벌금이 부과됐다. 시험장에 칼을 차고 왔어야 하는데 그러하지 않았다는 것이다.
