A superior－court judge in an American city was conducting jury selection for a case that might take up to four weeks. He asked the panel if that length of time would cause hardship for their families or their jobs. Two hands went up in the jury box.

"What's your problem, sir？" he asked the first man.

"I'm a butcher at the market," he replied. "There's only one other butcher, and it would be difficult if I were away that long."

The judge turned to the other man. "And what about you, sir？"

"I'm the other butcher at the market，" he said. The judge excused them both.

미국 어느 도시의 상급법원 판사가 4주 정도 걸릴 사건의 배심을 맡을 사람들을 심사했다. 4주나 계속해서 배심원 일을 하게 되면 가족이나 직장에 어려운 문제가 생기지 않겠냐고 그는 배심원으로 지정된 사람들에게 물었다. 두 사람이 손을 번쩍 들었다.

"선생님께서는 무슨 문제가 있으십니까？"하고 한 사람에게 물었다.

"저는 시장에서 정육점을 하고 있는데 다른 정육점이라곤 하나뿐이라서 그렇게 오랫동안 비우게 되면 문제가 있을 것 같습니다. "

판사는 손을 들었던 다른 사람에게 물었다. "선생님의 사정은 어떤 것입니까？"

"제가 다른 정육점을 운영하고 있는 사람입니다. "

판사는 그 두 사람 모두 배심원 일을 면하게 해줬다.
