My mother writes more checks in November than in any other month.

Uncle Sam gets his， her insurance policies all come due and our church holds its annual fund drive. So when our minister called regarding Mom's donation， she was quick to jump to the wrong conclusion.

The minister began by saying， "I was wondering if you'd like to reconsider the size of your gift."

"Reverend，" my mother interrupted，

"we'd like to be more generous， but you couldn't ask at a worse time."

"I know，" the minister continued.

"Your check bounced."


어머니는 다른 어느 달보다도 11월에 지출이 많아서 수표를 많이 발행한다.

정부가 받아가는 돈， 보험회사가 받아가는 돈， 그리고 교회에 내야 할 헌금 등이 모두 이 달에 몰려있는 것이다.

그래서 목사가 헌금 문제로 전화를 걸어오자 어머니는 엉뚱한 속단을 했다.

"헌금 액수를 재고하셔야 하는 게 아닐까 싶네요"라는 목사의 말이 떨어지자 어머니는 그의 말을 가로막고， "목사님， 더 내고 싶었지만 형편이 더없이 어렵습니다"라고 했다.

그러자 목사가 하는 말－－"잘 알고 있습니다. 댁의 수표가 퇴짜를 맞고 돌아왔거든요. "
