I served as an interpreter for a group of Americans touring Moscow.

During a bus ride to a village outside the city， I swapped stories with a native Russian interpreter.

She insisted that English－to－Russian translation is trickier because of our heavily idiomatic speech. The previous Sunday， she said， a colleague of hers had to translate the sermon of a visiting American pastor.

When the minister said， "I'm just tickled to death to be here，" the Russian translator thought frantically for a moment， then rendered in Russian， "Scratch me till I die."


난 모스크바 관광에 나선 미국인들의 통역을 했다. 교외의 한 마을로 가는 버스에서 현지인 통역과 이야기를 나누게 되었다.

그 여자의 말인즉 미국사람들이 영어특유의 관용적 표현을 많이 사용하기 때문에 영어를 러시아어로 통역하는 일이 더 까다롭다는 것이었다.

바로 그 전 일요일엔 그녀의 동료가 미국에서 온 한 목사의 설교를 통역했다나.

그런데 그 목사가 그 자리에 서게 돼서 대단히 기쁘다는 것을 관용구를 써서 표현하자 러시아인 통역은 잠시 정신없이 머리를 굴리더니 "내가 죽도록 긁어주십시오"라고 했다는 것이었다.
