지구 온난화로 허리케인,폭우 등과 같은 기상 이변이 증가함에 따라 우려의 목소리도 커지고 있다. 이에 따라 서울의 가장 멋진 계절인 봄과 가을이 아쉽게도 점점 짧아지고 있다.

올초 필자는 HSBC은행에서 소비한 종이사용량에 대한 보고서를 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 2007년 1년간 소비한 종이가 무려 150만장 이상이며,이를 나무로 환산하면 약 1600그루에 해당된다는 것이다. 주로 업무용으로 사용된 것이긴 하지만 그렇게 많은 나무가 사라진다고 생각하니 안타까운 생각을 지울 수 없었다.

은행이 다른 일로 비난받을 수는 있겠지만 환경 파괴범이 돼서는 안되겠다고 생각해 종이 소비를 개선하기 위한 직원들의 아이디어를 모았다. 그 중 하나가 모든 프린터와 복사기를 양면으로 인쇄할 수 있게 세팅하는 것이다. 이미 직원들에게도 고백한 바 있지만,양면으로 프린트된 서류를 돌려보며 읽는 것은 번거롭다. 또 양면으로 프린트하다 보면 시간도 더 걸린다. 하지만 우리가 조금만 노력하면 종이 사용량을 반으로 줄일 수 있다. 2007년 소비량을 기준으로 본다면 약 800그루의 나무를 구할 수 있다. 해마다 800그루의 나무를 보호할 수 있다면 이런 작은 수고는 감수할 만한 일이 아닐까.

우리가 생각해 낸 또 하나의 대안은 종이의 원료가 되는 나무를 심는 것이다. 나무는 이산화탄소를 흡수하고 산소를 공급해 공기 오염과 온실 가스를 줄여준다. 나무를 심고 숲을 가꾸는 일은 기후 변화를 줄일 수 있는 가장 현실적인 대안이다. 나무를 심는 일은 그 자체로도 즐거운 일이다.

지난 봄,필자는 동료들과 함께 강화도 전등사에 가서 나무를 심을 기회가 있었다. 나무도 심고,강화 유적지와 멋진 산도 구경할 수 있어서 기억에 남는 행사였다. 그래서 필자는 매년 봄이면 직원들과 나무를 심기로 결심했다.

자연은 우리가 후손에게 물려줘야 할 가장 소중한 유산이다. 점심 시간 컴퓨터 모니터 끄기,퇴근할 때 전등 끄기,양면 프린트하기 등 기후 변화를 막기 위해 생활 속에서 실천할 수 있는 일들은 많다. 이렇게 작은 노력이 모이면 큰 변화를 만들어낸다.

단풍을 보며 아름다운 가을 정취를 느낄 수 있는 서울.필자가 이런 풍경을 누리며 사는 것은 큰 축복이다. 오늘 우리의 작은 수고 덕분에 다음 세대가 보다 긴 가을을 즐길 수 있게 되길 바란다.

Simple Things Can Make a Substantial Difference

Like many people， I have read with increasing concern the impact that climate change or "global warming" is having on weather patterns around the world － with increased hurricanes， changed rainfall patterns and the like. During the last few days， as temperatures dropped to minus seven degrees when I left the house in the morning， I witnessed first hand one of the impacts of climate change Seoul's most attractive seasons in my view， spring and autumn， are becoming shorter！

Earlier this year I received a report about the paper consumption of HSBC in Korea. I was horrified to learn that during 2007 HSBC used more than one and a half million sheets of paper. To put it into context， I was advised that to manufacture that quantity of paper would mean the destruction of approximately 1，600 trees！ The huge amount of paper was of course used for business purposes， but it was distressing to realize that so many trees were disappearing. Banks get accused of many things， but I was not expecting environmental terrorism to be one of them.

My staff shared my concern and thought of ways that we could improve the situation. They came up with ideas to address both ends of the production cycle Reduced demand and increased supply.

To address the volume of consumption a simple yet effective measure was introduced. We made sure that all our printers and copiers printed double－sided. As I confessed to my colleagues， frankly， sometimes， it is a hassle to read documents that are printed double－sided and， yes， the printing process is somewhat slower. If we halve our consumption of paper， however， based on 2007's consumption figures we would save 800 trees. If this many trees can be protected annually this seems a very small sacrifice to make.

Replenishing the trees that have been destroyed is an obvious thing that can help. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and provide oxygen， which diminishes air pollution and greenhouse gases. Planting trees and cultivating forests is one of the most practical solutions for mitigating climate change. Planting trees can also be enjoyable. I joined many colleagues on a trip this spring to plant young trees at Jeondeung temple in Kanghwado. Being outdoors in the beautiful mountains in such a historic site was very memorable and great fun － I hope that colleagues from HSBC will plant trees every spring from now on.

We do not own nature. The environment is something valuable that we need to preserve for our descendants. Turning off the computer screen during lunch time， turning off lights before leaving the office， printing double－sided.....there must be many simple things we can do. If we become more considerate it really can make a substantial difference.

Living in Seoul， I think I have been blessed with many things， and one of them is to be able to enjoy the beautiful season of Autumn with stunning colours of leaves changing colour from green to various browns， reds and gold. By our simple actions today， I hope that many more generations of Koreans will be able to enjoy long Autumns in Korea. Maybe they will even think back to who it was that planted the trees they are enjoying.
