In a room of his mansion, a noblerman once placed all his fine old paintings, and one mirror．

Before each of these masterpieces, and also in front of the mirror, he laid a beautiful rug to protect his floor．

The room began to serve as an art gallery．

Now, after many years in such service, the rugs before the paintings are frayed thin with the passing of many feet．

The rug before the mirror is almost new．

It has been replaced for the twenty-fifth time．


어떤 귀족이 그의 저택의 방 하나에 그가 소장하고 있는 오래된 명화들과 함께 거울 하나를 걸어 놓았다．

마루바닥을 보호하기 위해 걸작품들과 거울 앞에는 미려한 융단을 깔아놓았다．

이렇게 해서 그 방은 미술관 역할을 하게 되었다．

그런데 여러 해가 지난 지금 그림 앞에 깔린 융단은 닳아서 얄팍해졌으나 거울 앞 웅단은 거의 신품이나 다름없다．

거울 앞 것은 스물다섯번이나 새 것으로 바꿔놓은 것이다．
