The charity organization realized that it had never received a donation from the town’s most successful lawyer．

The person in charge of donations called him and said, "Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least $500, 000 you give not a penny to charity. Wouldn’t you like to give back to the community in some way?"

The lawyer replied, "Did your research also show that my mother is dying after a long illness and my sister‘s husband died in a traffic accident, leaving her pennyless with three children."

The visitor, completely beaten, apologized, "I had no idea…"

The lawyer cut him off once again, "So, if I don’t give any money to them, why should give any to you?"


자선단체에서 알아보니 그 고장에서 가장 성공한 변호사가 한 푼도 기부를 해주지 않은 것이다．

기부금 담당자가 그 사람을 찾아갔다．

"우리가 조사해보니 선생님은 연간소득이 최소한 50만달러나 되는데 자선목적에는 한 푼도 쓰지 않으셨더군요．사회에 좀 돌려주실 생각이 없으신가요?"

"그렇게 조사했으면 내 모친이 오랜 변환 끝에 사경을 헤매고 있고 내 매부가 교통사고로 사망하면서 내 누이와 조카들 셋이 무일푼의 신세가 된 사실도 아시겠군"이라는 변호사의 말에 방문객은 완전히 허를 찔려 그저 "그런 사실은 전혀 몰랐네요…"라며 사과했다．

변호사는 다시 그의 말을 제지했다．

"그런데 내 집식구들에게도 한 푼 보태주지 않는 내가 당신들에게 돈을 주게 생겼냐 말이야?"
