When Franklin D.Roosevelt was running for a third term on the
Democratic ticket, a Republican candidate for the legislature in Vermont
declared he was supporting F.D.R for the presidency.

A Vermont Republican challenged this man''s divided party loyalty.

"What are you," he asked the candidate, "a Republican or a Democrat?
I want an honest answer."

"I''ll give you an honest answer," said the candidate.

"I''m a politician."

루스벨트가 민주당 공천으로 3차임기 대통령으로 출마했을 때 버몬트
주의회에 공화당후보로 출마한 사람이 루스벨트 지지를 선언하고 나섰다.

그러자 그곳 공화당당원이 그 후보의 당충성심이 헷갈리는 사실을
문제삼았다.

"당신은 어느 쪽입니까.

공화당원입니까, 아니면 민주당원입니까?

솔직히 대답해보시오"

"솔직히 대답하리다.

난 정치인이외다"
