When I was a teenager， I scraped up money to buy an old Ford pickup.

As a present, my parents got me brand－new upholstery for the seats. Once I slammed a door a little too hard， and the window shattered.

I didn't have any money to replace it. I drove it anyway. Then one day it began to rain. I sat in my class and watched my car get drenched through the broken window. Suddenly I saw my mom and dad tear into the parking lot.

They pulled up next to my truck and dragged a huge piece of plastic out of their car. Then， in the pouring rain， they covered up the truck. I watched them do this. And I just began crying right there in class. －－Jay Leno


10대 때 일이다. 푼푼이 모은 돈으로 난 중고 포드 픽업을 샀다. 그러자 부모님은 선물로 시트커버를 새로 장만해 주셨다. 한 번은 문을 좀 세게 쾅 닫았더니 그만 창문 유리가 박살나버렸다. 돈이 없어 유리를 새로 끼지 못한 채 그대로 몰고 다녔다.

그러던 어느 날 비가 내리기 시작했다. 난 교실에 앉아서 깨진 창문을 통해 내 차가 흠뻑 젖어드는 걸 바라봤다. 그런데 갑자기 어머니와 아버지가 탄 차가 황급히 주차장에 나타나는 게 보였다.

내 차 옆에 주차하시고는 차에서 커다란 비닐을 끌어내셨다. 그리고는 억수로 쏟아지는 비를 맞으면서 내 차를 덮어주는 것이었다. 난 그렇게 하고 있는 두 분을 바라봤다. 그리고는 교실에 앉은 그 자리에서 눈물을 흘렸다. －－제이 리노
