When a rural preacher returned after visiting Chicago, a parishioner who was a notorious drinker met him at the train station．

"How are things here?"the preacher asked．

"Sad, si. A tornado came and wiped out my house."

"Dear, dear,"cried the parson．

"Well, I’m not surprised. You remember I warned you about the way you had been living． Punishment for sin is inevitable."

"It also destroyed your house, sir," he said．

"It did?"the pastor was horrified．

"The ways of the Lord are past human understanding."


시골 목사가 시카고 여행에서 돌아오자 술꾼으로 악명 높은 신도가 철도역에서 그를 맞아주었다．

"별일 없어요"하고 목사는 물었다．

"큰일 났습니다． 토네이도가 와서 저의 집을 쓸어 버렸습니다．""

저런, 저런, 그럴 줄 알았어요．그런 식으로 살면 안 된다고 내가 경고했잖아요．죄를 지으면 반드시 벌이 따라오게 마련입니다．"

"목사님 집도 결딴났는데요"라고 그는 말했다．

"그래요?"라며 목사는 혼비백산 했다．

"주님께서 하시는 일은 우리들로서는 도무지 알다가도 모르겠군."
