He was so lazy and so useless that the townspeople thought it would
be a good idea to bury him alive.

They put him in a coffin without any protest from his family, and
started off for the cemetery.

But they were stopped by a stranger who had heard of it.

They told the stranger the town was sick of providing him with food.

"If you will hold off, I''ll give that man a wagonload of corn," said
the stranger.

Before the townspeople could reply, a head was raised out of the
coffin, and asked, "Is that corn shucked?"

게을러서 아무짝에도 쓸모없는 사람을 동네사람들은 생매장하는 것이
좋겠다고 생각했다.

가족들마저 아무런 이의를 제기하지 않는 가운데 그를 관속에 집어넣은
마을사람들은 묘지로 향했다.

이에 관해 소문을 들은 이방인이 일행을 제지하자 그들은 그를 먹여살리는
일에 진저리가 난다고 설명했다.

그러자 그사람은 "여러분이 이 일을 중지한다면 이사람에게 마차 한대
분량의 옥수수를 주겠습니다"라고 했다.

동네사람들이 미처 대답하기도 전에 그사람은 관밖으로 불쑥 머리를
내밀더니 "껍질 벗긴걸로요?"하고 묻는 것이었다.
