A surgeon who had couched a cataract and restored the sight of a poor woman， called together his professional brethren， declaring himself unequal to the solution. He said that the sight of his patient was so perfectly restored that she could perform any thing which required particular accuracy of vision: but that when he presented her with a book， she was not capable of distinguishing one letter from another！ The case excited all the gentlemen present， and various solution were offered， but none could command the general assent. The problem grew darker from every explanation， when by a question put by the servant who attended， it was discovered that the woman never learned to read.


백내장 수술로 가난한 여자에게 시력을 회복하게 해준 의사가 도저히 해결할 수 없는 문제가 있다면서 동료 의사들을 불렀다. 환자는 각별히 정확한 시력을 요하는 일을 해낼 수 있을 정도로 시력이 좋아졌지만 책을 보여주면 글자를 제대로 분간하지 못한다는 것이었다. 그 문제는 참석자 모두가 흥미를 갖게 했지만 아무도 수긍이 가는 해답을 제시하지 못했다. 문제는 갈수록 미궁으로 빠져드는 것만 같았는데,그 자리에 있던 한 도우미의 질문을 통해 그 여자가 문맹자라는 사실이 밝혀진 것이다.
