A penny­pinching farmer didn't want his hired hand to stop working to eat meals.After breakfast one morning，he told the farmhand，"It's such a nuisance to come in from the field，wash up for lunch and take time to eat.Why don't we save time and eat lunch now？"

The hired man agreed.The farmer's wife brought in some cold meat and fried potatoes，and the two men ate again.When they had finished，the cheap farmer said，"While we're still at the table，let's have supper too." They were now served steak，boiled potatoes and mixed vegetables，and the man ate once more.

"Now that the meals are out of the way，" the farmer said， "we can go out and work all day without interruption."

"Oh，no，" the farmhand answered. "I never work after supper."


구두쇠 농부는 고용한 일꾼이 일을 하다 말고 식사하는 게 못마땅했다. 그는 아침을 먹고 나서 일꾼에게 말했다. "밭에서 일을 하다 말고 점심식사 때문에 들어와서 씻고 어쩌고 하는 게 여간 성가신 게 아니잖은가. 그러니 지금 점심까지 먹어버리면 어떻겠는가？"

일꾼은 좋다고 했다. 농부 아낙은 식은 고기와 튀긴 감자를 내놓았고 두 사람은 다시 식사를 했다. 식사가 끝나자 구두쇠 농부는 다시 말했다. "이렇게 식사하는 김에 저녁도 먹음세." 이제 식탁엔 스테이크，삶은 계란 섞인 야채가 나왔다. 일꾼은 또 한 번 식사를 했다.

"자아 식사문제는 해결됐으니 이제 나가서 온종일 일을 하세." "천만에요. 난 저녁을 먹고 나서는 절대로 일을 하지 않는 답니다. "
