When I was at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.， I became friends with a close－knit group of Koreans， and we attended many activities together. One night they invited me to a holiday banquet， and urged me to help myself to the delicious dishes on the table. After trying everything， I went back for seconds， commenting that the leaves with sesame seeds were especially nice. Looking somewhat embarrassed， my host replied， "That's the centerpiece. We have it for the aroma！"


뉴저지 주 브런즈위크에 있는 러트거즈 대학에 다닐 무렵 난 똘똘 뭉친 한국 학생 동아리와 가까이 지내면서 많은 활동에 동참했다. 어느 날 밤 그들은 명절 음식을 장만하고는 나를 청해 맛있는 음식들을 마음껏 먹으라고 했다.

이것저것 죄다 먹어본 난 씨가 달린 깻잎이 별미라고 말하면서 더 갖다 먹으려고 일어섰다. 그랬더니 그 자리를 마련한 사람이 좀 난처한 표정을 지으면서 "그건 먹으라는 게 아니라 향기가 좋아서 장식품으로 내놓은 건데…"라고 하는 것이었다.
