Around the turn of the century, an analysis was conducted in the U.S. to compare the world‘s two leading economies．

It resulted in the following conclusion．

"There are many reasons why the U.S. finds itself playing second fiddle to Japan in many hi-tech areas where U.S. preeminence was once unquestioned．

Some of the reasons are complex, but one can be put in a statistical nutshell；

Out of every 10,000 Americans, 20 are nlawyers, 40 are accountants, and 70 are engineers．

Out of every 10,000 Japanese, one is a lawyer, three are accountants and 400 are engineers."


21세기로 바뀔 무렵, 미국에서 세계 양대 경제를 비교하는 분석이 실시되었다．

그 분석의 결론은 다음과 같았다．

"미국의 우위가 당연시되던 여러 첨단기술 분야에서 미국이 일본에게 뒤지고 있는 데는 여러 가지 이유가 있다．

어떤 이유는 복잡한 것이지만 한 가지 이유만은 통계수치로 요약될 수 있다．

미국인 10,000명당 법률가는 20명, 계리사는 40명, 엔지니어는 70명이다．

일본의 경우 10,000명당 법률가는 1명, 계리사는 3명, 엔지니어는 400명이다."
