A certain prophetess lived beside a lake in New York Stae about the year 1820．

She announced to her numerous followers that she possessed the power of walking on water, and that she proposed to do so at 11 o‘clock on a certain morning．

At the stated time, thousands of faithful followers assembled beside the lake．

She spoke to them saying, "Are you all entirely persuaded that I can walk on water?"

With one voice they replied, "We are."

"In that case."

she announced, "there is no need for me to do so."

And they all went home．


1820년께 뉴욕주의 한 호수가에는 여자예언자가 살고있었다．

수많은 추종자들을 보고 그 여자는 자기가 물 위를 거닐 수 있는 신통력을 가졌다면서 어떠어떤 날 아침 11시에 그것을 보여주마고 했다．

정해진 시각이 되자 수천명의 충실한 추종자들이 호수가에 모여들었다．

"다들 내가 물위를 거닐 수 있다는 것을 전적으로 믿습니까?" 하고 그녀는 물었다．

"네에" 하고 그들은 일제히 대답했다．

"그렇다면 보여줄 것도 없네요"라고 예언자는 말했다．

그러자 사람들은 모두 돌아갔다．
