Samsung SDI Recognized for Industry-Leading ESS Safety Technologies at Korea Tech Festival

Samsung SDI today announced that it has won the ministerial-level Korea Technology Awards Grand Prize in recognition of its technologies that enhance the safety and reduce the cost of Energy Storage Systems (ESS). The award, presented by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, was conferred at the 2025 Korea Tech Festival held at COEX in Seoul. Samsung SDI received the honor this year for its advancements in fire safety and cost reduction in its all-in-one ESS solution, the Samsung Battery Box (SBB). Notably, Samsung SDI was the only domestic battery manufacturer to be recognized, underscoring its leading technological capabilities in ESS safety. The company highlighted its safety innovations, including preventing battery fire propagation with cutting-edge safety technology and reducing fire risks through remote monitoring systems at all domestic sites. The Samsung Battery Box (SBB) is Samsung SDI’s integrated ESS battery solution that combines batteries and safety systems within a 20-foot container to maximize customer convenience and system performance. It features a highly durable prismatic battery cell and incorporates Samsung SDI’s proprietary Enhanced Direct Injection (EDI) and No Thermal Propagation (No TP) technologies, delivering industry-leading fire safety. Building on the agreement signed in October with the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation to promote a safer ESS ecosystem, Samsung SDI has once again validated the superior fire safety of its ESS batteries through this prestigious award. Such recognition comes ahead of the government’s second-round ESS project bidding, in which safety criteria are expected to play a more significant role, further bolstering the company’s competitive position. "We have established industry-leading competitiveness in ESS safety technologies," said a Samsung SDI official. "By combining the durability advantages of prismatic batteries with our advanced safety technologies, we will further reinforce our position

Samsung SDI to Collaborate on All-Solid-State Battery Validation Project with BMW Group

Samsung SDI today announced that it has signed a trilateral agreement with Germany's premium manufacturer BMW Group and U.S. battery technology company Solid Power to collaborate on an all-solid-state battery validation project.Under this arrangement, Samsung SDI will supply ASSB cells, featuring enhanced both energy density and safety, by utilizing the solid electrolyte developed by Solid Power, a leading all-solid-state battery technology company, based in the United States. BMW will develop modules and packs for ASB cells. The three partners aim to evaluate the performance of ASSB cells based on the agreed parameters and requirements, and to integrate them into BMW’s next-generation evaluation vehicles.ASSB cells use solid electrolyte instead of liquid electrolyte found in conventional lithium-ion batteries. They offer superior safety and can achieve higher energy density compared with conventional batteries, enabling electric vehicles to drive longer ranges without having to accept disadvantages in terms of weight of the overall storage system. The collaboration carries significance in that the three specialized companies have established a practical collaboration system and a model for global value chains for ASSB cells, aiming to pave the way for their commercialization by bringing together their complementary expertise in cells manufacturing, automaking and materials development.BMW has selected Samsung SDI as a partner, considering its long-standing trust in the battery maker built through years-long partnership, as viewed by industry observers. Also, known as the front-runner in the all-solid-state battery territory, Samsung SDI is recognized for its technological prowess in the whole new battery field. The upcoming collaboration could draw industry attention as the long-running partnership between Samsung SDI and BMW expands to the new arena.Samsung SDI and BMW have maintained their collaborative relations since 2009 when the German automotive group chose
