My wife and teen－age son belong to a local tae kwon do club. The head instructor of the club is a highly ranked black belt. Away from class， he is a plumber named Dave. One day， after making futile attempts to unclog a blocked pipe， I called Dave to ask if he could stop by and take care of it. An hour later， he pulled up in his truck just as we were going out the door. As he came up the walk， my wife and son， ever mindful of their martial－art etiquette， stood rigidly at attention and bowed deeply from the waist. Dave ga ve a quick nod in return and went on unto the house. Just then， I saw my next－door neighbor standing in his yard， watching us with a perplexed look. "Wow，" he said. "That guy must be one great plumber！"


아내와 십대의 아들이 동네 태권도 도장 회원이다． 도장의 선임 사범은 까만 띠의 고단자다． 도장을 나서면 그는 데이브란 이름의 배관공이다． 어느 날 수도관이 막혀서 뚫어보려고 아무리 해도 안 되기에 데이브를 불렀다． 한 시간 후 우리가 막 밖으로 나서는데 그의 트럭이 도착했다． 그가 우리 집으로 걸어 들어오자 그 무술의 예절이 몸에 밴 아내와 아들놈은 꿋꿋한 차려 자세를 하고는 허리를 잔뜩 굽혀 인사를 했다． 데이브는 얼른 답례를 하고는 안으로 들어갔다． 바로 그때 마당에 나와 있다가 이 광경을 바라본 옆집 사람이 어리둥절한 표정을 지으면 말했다． “와아， 저 사람 대단한 연관공인가보네요！”
