An American journalist had done a story on gender roles in Kuwait several years before the Gulf War, and she noted then that women customarily walked about 10 yards behind their husbands.


She returned to Kuwait recently and observed that the men now walked several yards behind their wives.


She approached one of the women for explanation.


"Land mines," replied the woman.



걸프전쟁이 터지기 몇 년 전 미국의 한 여기자는 쿠웨이트 남녀간의 역할 차이에 관한 글을 쓴 일이 있었는데 그때 보니 여자들은 으레 남자들보다 10야드 쯤 뒤로 처져서 걷고 있었다.


그런데 최근에 그곳을 다시 찾은 그 기자가 주목하게 된 것은 여자들이 남자들보다 몇 야드 앞서 가고 있는 사실이었다.


기자는 한 여자에게 다가가서 그렇게 달라진 까닭을 물었다.


"지뢰" 때문에 그렇게 된 것이란다.
