[박영실칼럼] 글로벌여성단체 SIWA President INTERVIEW-Robin Carney

1962년에 창립 된 SIWA(Seoul International Women’s Association)는 한국에서 가장 크고 장기간 운영되는 국제 여성 단체입니다. SIWA는 특히 기금 모금 행사 인 SIWA & 외교 커뮤니티 Bazaar를 통해 오랫동안 우리나라 소외계층자들에게 희망을 나누어 주고 있는 훌륭한 단체입니다. 이번 칼럼에서 저는 SIWA 대표와의 인터뷰를 통해 SIWA에 대한 활동과 목표 그리고 정신 등에 대해서 소개하게 되어 기쁘게 생각합니다.

SIWA (Seoul International Woman’s Association) is the largest and longest-running international women’s organization that founded in 1962 in Korea. SIWA is an excellent organization that has been giving hope to our underprivileged people for a long time, especially through the fund raising event SIWA & the diplomatic community Bazaar. I am pleased to introduce SIWA’s activities, goals and spirit through an interview with the SIWA representative In this column.

1. SIWA의 새로운 대표로서의 당신의 각오는 무엇입니까?

SIWA의 회장으로 선출되어 영광입니다. 저는 SIWA를 통해 우정, 풍요, 자선을 통해 삶을 향상시키는 사명을 수행 할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 가능한 한 많은 국제 여성들에게 우리의 사명을 전하고, 지역 사회와의 관계를 발전시키며 자기개발에 관심있는 한국 여성들에게 다가가고 싶습니다.

1. What is your determination as a new representative of SIWA?
I am honored to have been elected as President of SIWA, and I hope I can carry out our mission of enhancing lives through friendship, enrichment and charity. My objective is to communicate our mission to as many international women as possible, and to reach Korean women interested in developing their ties to the expat community.

2. SIWA를 한국인에게 어떻게 소개하고 싶습니까?

저는 한국인들에게 SIWA가 더 넓은 세상과 연결될 수 있음을 보여주기를 희망합니다. 우리 SIWA는 40 개국 이상의 여성을 대표합니다. SIWA는 한국인들이 다른 문화와의 친숙 함 및 외국인과의 우정을 발전시키기 위해 이용할 수있는 엄청난 문화 지식의 원천입니다.

2. How would you like to introduce SIWA to Koreans?

I hope to show Koreans that SIWA can be their link to the wider world; we represent women from over 40 nations. This is a tremendous source of cultural knowledge that Koreans can tap into to develop their language skills, familiarity with other cultures and friendships with foreigners.

3. SIWA는 어떤 활동을합니까?

SIWA는 매월 다양한 활동을하고 있습니다. 예를 들면, 회원 모집을위한 커피 모닝, 서울 전역의 다양한 투어, 요리에서부터 북클럽에 이르기까지 모든 분야에 대한 관심 그룹 등이 있습니다. 일년에 두 번 주요 자선 기금 모금 행사를 개최합니다 : ASAS 및 기타 국제기구와 함께 개최되는 SIWA & 외교 커뮤니티 바자회 (SIWA & Diplomatic Community Bazaar) 및 SIWA Charity Gala. 함께 이러한 활동은 자선 활동뿐만 아니라 자선 활동을위한 기금을 일년 내내 모금합니다.

3. What activities does SIWA do?

SIWA hosts a variety of activities each month, including a Coffee Morning for members to socialize, various tours throughout Seoul and Interest Groups devoted to everything from cuisine, to books. Twice a year we hold our major charitable fundraisers: the SIWA & Diplomatic Community Bazaar, held together with ASAS and other international organizations, and the SIWA Charity Gala. Together these activities raise funds for our Philanthropy Project as well as charitable giving throughout the year.

4. 외국인이 한국에 와서 가장 어려워하는 부분은 무엇입니까?

어떤 외국인들은 한국에 도착할 때 문화적 충격을 경험합니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 음식에 익숙하지 않을 수도 있기 때문이며 언어의 한계로 겁이 날 수 있습니다. 그러나 제가 알고있는 대부분의 외국인들은 이곳에 살고 나서 한국 음식을 사랑하게되며, 국제 요리에 대한 선택의 여지가 많다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 저는 아쉽게도 한국어를 마스터하지 못했다는 것을 인정하지만, 매일 한국인과 교류 할 때 “안녕하세요”와 “감사합니다”와 같은 말을 건네려고 노력합니다.

4. What is the most difficult part for foreigners to come to Korea?

Some foreigners experience culture shock when arriving in Korea because they may not be accustomed to the food, and the language can be quite intimidating. However, most of the expats I know come to love Korean food after living here and realize that there are many options for international cuisine available too. I admit that I have not mastered Korean, but a few words like “hello” and “thank you” go a long way when interacting with local Koreans every day!

5. 한국에 오는 외국인 중 한국에서 가장 만족스러운 부분은 무엇입니까?

한국은 문화와 전통이 엄청나게 풍부하며, 대부분의 외국인들이 대한민국에 대해 배울 수있는 기회를 갖는 것에 대해 대단히 기쁘게 생각합니다. 저는 최근에 SIWA Cultural Connection 이벤트로 조직 된 전통 판소리 (Pansori) 공연에 참석할 수있는 특권을 누렸습니다. 외국인인 저희들이 이 이야기를 이해할 수 있도록 영어 자막으로 이 예술 형식을 보는 것은 놀라운 경험이었습니다. 저희는 또한 중요한 한국 전통에 대해 더 깊이 이해할 수 있도록 공연자들에게 질문을 할 기회가있어서 좋았습니다.

5. What is the most satisfying part of foreigners coming to Korea?

Korea is incredibly rich in culture and tradition, and I think most foreigners feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to learn about our host nation. I recently had the privilege of attending a traditional Pansori performance, organized as a SIWA Cultural Connection event. It was an incredible experience to watch this art form, with English subtitles so we could understand the story. We also had the opportunity to ask questions of the performers afterwards, to get a deeper understanding of an important Korean tradition.

7. 지금까지 SIWA에서 가장 기억에 남을 순간이나 활동은 무엇입니까?

너무 많아서 하나만 선택하기는 어렵지만, 2018 평창 동계 올림픽에서 SIWA의 자원 봉사자로서 참여했던 것이 가장 기억에 남는 순간이었습니다. SIWA 회원들은 2018 년 올림픽 및 장애인 올림픽 개최를위한 평창 조직위원회 (POCOG)가 잠재적 인 게임 자원 봉사자들을 대상으로 해서 영어로 600 회 심사를 실시하는 것을 도왔습니다. 감사의 말씀을 드리 자면, 우리는 장애인 올림픽에서 자원 봉사 할 단체를 파견 할 수 있는 기회를 얻어서 좋았습니다. 우리는 대표단 지원에 배정되어 많은 참가국의 참모들과 운동 선수들과 함께 일했으며 이는 저희들에게 진정한 명예였습니다.

7. What is your most memorable moment or activity in SIWA so far?

It is difficult to choose, but I would have to say that participating with SIWA as a volunteer at the 2018 PyeongChang Paralympic Games has been my most memorable moment. SIWA members helped the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) conduct 600 screening interviews in English for potential Games volunteers. As a thank you, we were given the opportunity to send a group to volunteer at the Paralympics. We were assigned to Delegation Support and worked with the staff and athletes of many participating countries, which was a true honor.

8. 한국에 사는 가장 인상적인 한국인의 친절 함은 무엇입니까?

저는 항상 한국인들이 외국인을 돕는 것에 매우 개방적이라는 것을 깨달았습니다. 저희 가족이 하이킹을 가기 위해 오솔길 입구를 찾으려고했지만 완전히 길을 잃었을 때를 기억합니다. 한 친절한 한국인 신사는 저희에게 그 길을 알려주었을 뿐만 아니라 저희와 이런저런 이야기를 나누면서 저희가 살았던 텍사스의 집에 관한 것을 알고 싶어했습니다! 저는 대화를 나누고 싶어하는 한국인들과 함께 남산 공원에서 개를 데리고 다니면서 많은 우호적 인 만남을 가졌습니다.
저는 한국인들이 세계에 대해 더 개방적이되어 가고 있으며 더 많은 것을 배우고 싶어한다고 생각합니다.

8. What is the kindness of the most impressive Korean people living in Korea?

I have always found Koreans to be very open to helping foreigners. I remember an occasion when my family was trying to find the entrance to a trail to go hiking but were quite lost. A friendly Korean gentleman not only showed us the way but wanted to know all about my home state of Texas! I’ve had many other friendly encounters while walking my dog in Namsan Park with Koreans who want to meet and strike up a conversation. I think that Koreans are becoming more open to the rest of the world and are interested in learning more.







9. 마지막으로 SIWA의 특별한 점과 자부심에 대해 한말씀 부탁합니다.

SIWA는 우리의 역사를 자랑스럽게 생각합니다! 1962 년 창립 된 우리는 한국에서 가장 크고 장기간 운영되는 국제 여성 단체입니다. 우리는 특히 기금 모금 행사 인 SIWA & 외교 커뮤니티 Bazaar를 자랑스럽게 생각합니다.
올해는 제 56 회 연례 바자회로 창립 이래 30 억 원 이상을 모으고 있습니다. 작년에 35 개국 대사관뿐만 아니라 국제 클럽, 자선 단체, SIWA 스폰서 및 벤더 등 80여 단체 및 외교 공관이 모여 다양한 제품과 음식을 선보였습니다.
2018 년 11 월 12 일 롯데 호텔 (The Lotte Hotel)의 바자회 (Bazaar)를 방문 하셔서 이번 행사가 한국 자선 단체의 이익을 위해 큰 성공을 거둘 수 있도록 도와주시면 고맙겠습니다.

9. Finally, I would like to ask you what SIWA’s special points and pride you would like to talk about.

SIWA is proud of our history! Founded in 1962, we are the largest and longest-running international women’s organization in Korea. We are particularly proud of our flagship fundraising event, the SIWA & Diplomatic community Bazaar. This year marks the 56th annual Bazaar which has raised over 3 billion KRW since its inception. Last year, more than 80 organizations and diplomatic missions, including representatives from 35 embassies as well as international clubs, charities, SIWA sponsors and vendors, joined together to showcase a diverse range of products and food. Please visit the Bazaar at the Lotte Hotel on November 12, 2018 and help us make this year’s event a huge success for the benefit of Korean charities.



*Robin joined SIWA in August 2015 and served as Newsletter Manager from 2015-16 and VP Brand Communications from 2016-18. A dual American-Portuguese citizen, after finishing her MBA, she worked for Deloitte as a management consultant in New York and Lisbon. She then moved into the non-profit sector, managing fundraising and communications projects for breast cancer charities in Portugal and Belgium. After 15 years in Europe, Robin and her family moved to Seoul and are enjoying the chance to explore Asia.
