Samsung SDI Takes Part in Auto Shanghai 2023



Showcases high-energy density and quick charging technologies for better EV performance

Unveils the latest PRiMX product line-up including P6 and 46-pi cylindrical batteries



SEOUL, Korea – April 18, 2023 – Samsung SDI today announced that it unveiled ‘super-gap’ battery technologies targeting the Chinese auto market at Auto Shanghai 2023 that kicked off on April 18 for a 10-day run at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. The company prepared a private booth for their customers to showcase its latest technologies and products.

Auto Shanghai is part of the country’s biggest motor show also known as Auto China, which alternates in between Shanghai and Beijing. This year marks Samsung SDI’s fifth participation in Auto China since 2014.

In their private booth filled with a variety of products and technologies catered to each customer’ needs, the key features presented by the Korean battery maker are high energy density and quick charging capabilities designed for improving the range and charging speed of electric vehicles.

In particular, Samsung SDI showcased a range of EV battery products along with P6 (the Gen.6 prismatic battery) that features higher energy density and faster charging speed with its innovative high-nickel NCA and proprietary silicone-carbon-nanocomposite (SCN) material technologies.

For P6 products, Samsung SDI applied high-nickel cathode over 91% and silicone anode, enhancing the energy density by more than 10% from their previous line-up of P5 (the Gen.5 prismatic battery). This latest battery product also boasts an outstanding quick charge capability, reaching 80% charge in just 10 minutes of charging, enabled by improved manufacturing methods. The company is poised to initiate the mass production of P6 in 2024.

Besides its innovative battery products, Samsung SDI put on display mock-ups of 46-pi cylindrical battery products, new battery platform featuring larger sizes and better performances. The company adds that this newest addition to their cylindrical battery line-up is emblematic of Samsung SDI’s differentiating product edge achieved by their technological competence in material technology.

Enumerating their business roadmap for the solid-state battery which it seeks to begin mass-producing in 2027, the Samsung’s battery business arm presented where the battery industry should be heading in terms of developing the battery technologies. Samsung SDI plans to complete the construction of its solid-state battery pilot line in the first half and commence the production of prototypes soon after.

To add excitement to the China’s biggest auto show, Samsung SDI introduced its own battery brand PRiMX for the first time in the country. Launched in 2021, PRiMX stands for Prime Battery for Maximum Experience.

Samsung SDI recently established a new research and development center named SDI R&D China (SDIRC) in Shanghai. The new R&D center is going to focus on strengthening the collaborative network with prominent universities and research institutes in China in order to secure localized specialty technologies. A new research lab dedicated to verification of battery materials under SDIRC will play a role in sensing and verifying new materials.
