After three years of separation, the couple finally divorced amicably. The man wanted to date again and looked in the personals column of the local newspaper. After reading through all the listings, he circled three that seemed possible in terms of age and interests, but put off calling them. Two days later, there was a message on his answering machine from his ex-wife: “I came over to your house to borrow some tools today and saw the ads you circled in the paper: Don’t call the one in the second column. It’s me.”

3년을 별거하던 부부가 결국 합의이혼을 했다. 남자는 다른 여자와 사귈 생각으로 지역신문의 개인 소식란을 살폈다. 죽 봐내려가다 나이와 취향이 적합해 보이는 세 군데에 동그라미를 쳤으나 곧장 전화를 걸지는 않았다. 이틀 후 전화 자동응답기에 전처의 메시지가 떴다 - “오늘 몇 가지 연장을 빌려오려고 갔다가 당신이 신문 광고에 동그라미를 쳐놓은 걸 봤어요. 둘째 줄에 동그라미 친 데는 전화하지 마요. 그거 나예요.”
