▶ 일반적 실수 6 : 동사 뒤에 쓰이는 전치사

영작문 시험에서 한번씩 꼭 출제되는 문제가 어떤 동사들 뒤에 쓰이는 관용적 표현의 전치사를 알고 있는가를 판단하는 것이다.

아래의 문장은 잘못된 전치사를 사용한 예다.

City Council members frequently meet until the early morning hours in order to work in their stalemates.

'work in'이 항상 틀렸다는 것은 아니다. 'work in'은 누군가가 일하는 분야 혹은 장소에 사용 될 수 있다.

하지만 위의 예는 그러한 의미의 문장이 아니다.

위에서 나타내고자 하는 것을 표현하기 위해서는，'work though' 혹은 'work out'을 사용해야 한다.

다음의 예로 확실히 확인해 보자.

The singer's new CD was frowned at by many parents because of its violent lyrics.

'frowned at'은 영어에서 쓰이지 않는 문구이다. 더 나은 동사－전치사 조합은 'frowned upon'이다.
