After purchasing a chandelier， the woman made arrangements at the store for an electrician to install it． Back home， she realized that she， a widow， was having a strange man coming into her home at night． She had to make it appear as though there was someone else in the house． She draped one of her husband‘s old sweaters on a chair and turned on a radio and a lamp in another room． After the electrician had started working， she excused herself and went into the other room， where she spoke to herself in low tones． When the job was completed， the man quoted her a price and said， ”Well， I would have charged more， but your friend in the store asked me to give you a break because you‘re a widow and live alone．”

샹들리에를 구입한 여자는 기술자가 와서 달아주도록 그 가게에 부탁했다． 집에 돌아와 생각하니 과부인 그녀의 집에 밤중에 모르는 남자가 오게 되는 것이 아닌가． 그래서 혼자 사는 여자가 아닌 것처럼 보이게 할 필요를 느꼈다． 남편이 입던 스웨터를 꺼내서 의자에 걸쳐 놓고， 방 하나엔 전등과 라디오를 켜놓았다． 기술자가 와서 작업을 시작하자 여자는 수고를 하라면서 자리를 뜨고는 그 방에 들어가서 나직한 소리로 혼자 중얼거렸다．
작업이 끝나자 남자는 출장비를 청구하면서 말했다． “이 거 있죠， 덜 받는 겁니다． 댁에서 아는 그 가게 사람이 부탁하더군요． 바깥양반이 돌아가셔서 혼자 지내고 계시는 분이니 특별히 봐드리라고요．”
