지난 호까지 영작문을 쓸 때 주의해야 할 12가지에 대하여 알아보았다.

이 칼럼의 주목적은 '어떻게 하면 영작문을 잘 쓸 수 있을까'이다.

이렇게 써라，저렇게 써라 하는 수많은 책들이 서점에 쌓여 있으며 독자들 또한 몇 권씩은 가지고 있거나 공부하였으리라 생각한다.

저자는 어떻게 하면 영작문을 잘 쓸 것인가를 이제부터는 거꾸로 접근해 보고자 한다.

영작문을 작성할 때 가장 쉽게 실수하는 것들을 찾아 볼 것이다.

물론 독자들의 대부분이 알고 있는 문법적인 것일 수도 있지만 너무 쉽기에 간과하여 지나칠 수 있는 것들이다.

쉬운 것일지라도 집중하지 않으면 실수하게 되며，틀리게 되는 것이다.

▶ 일반적 실수 1 : 주어가 동사 뒤에 올 때 주어－동사 일치의 실수

단수 주어는 단수 동사를 요구하며，복수 주어는 복수 동사를 요구한다.

단순하다. 이러한 정상적인 상황과 문장에서는 영어를 공부한 사람이라면 아주 쉬운 것이다.

그러나 특별한 상황일 경우 주어－동사 일치는 속임수가 될 수 있으며，문장 속에서 무엇이 주어인지 모호해질 때가 있다.

Wrong : Despite an intensive campaign to encourage conservation，there is many Americans who have not accepted recycling as a way of life.

위의 문장에서 주어는 복수인 'Americans'이다.

물론 독자는 무엇이 잘못되었는지 알 수 있을 것이다. 주어를 찾아야 한다.

Wrong : High above the Hudson River rises the gleaming skyscrapers of Manhattan.

'Hudson River'가 주어일까？

강이 rise 할 수는 없는 것이다. 실제 주어는 'skyscrapers'이다.

그러므로 동사는 복수 형태가 되어야 한다.

Wrong : We do not have no class Friday.

My education was deficient in mathematics.

When young，I had no liking for math.

I studied only what was required to graduate from school.

Now，I wish I had learned more about math.

Specifically，I wish I had studied higher mathematics，because so much about it now seems beautiful.

Perhaps most of all，topology － the study of objects' shapes － fascinates me now.

Maybe I am just naive，but it seems fascinating to think that a coffee cup，or a doughnut，or a pair of eyeglasses has a shape with a mathematical description.

When I look at an ordinary object like an apple or a tea bag，I wonder what formula a topologist would use to describe it.

Another wonderful study in math is conics.

I know almost nothing about conics，either.

All I know is that it describes the curves generated by slicing a cone in certain ways.

When I see a sliced carrot at a restaurant，I think of conics and wonder how it would describe the form of a particular slice.

The math of things one can see and touch and feel is wonderful，yet a mystery to me.

Now I wish I had taken math more seriously in my early years and learned more about it.

Therefore，if I had the opportunity to study one more time，I would definitely choose mathematics.

내 교육에서 수학이 불충분하였다.

어렸을 때 수학을 싫어했으며，단지 학교를 졸업하기 위하여 요구되었던 필수 과목만 공부했었다.

하지만 이제는 수학을 더 공부했었더라면 한다.

특히 지금 매우 신비로워 보이는 높은 레벨의 수학을 공부했었더라면 한다.

수학에서도 아마도 물체의 형태에 대하여 공부하는 '기하학'이 나를 경이롭게 만든다.

아마도 내가 순박할지도 모르지만，커피컵，도넛 혹은 안경과 같은 것이 수학적으로 묘사할 수 있는 형태를 가지고 있다고 생각하는 것이 경이롭게 보이는 것 같다.

때때로 사과 혹은 티백과 같은 평범한 물체를 바라볼 때，기하학자들이 그것들을 묘사하기 위하여 어떠한 공식을 사용할지 궁금해진다.

수학에서 경이로운 또 다른 공부는 원뿔 곡선론이다.

그것이 무엇인지 나는 거의 모르고 있다.

내가 알고 있는 것이라고는 원뿔 곡선론이라는 것이 원뿔을 어떤 방식으로 절단하여 생성되는 곡선을 묘사하는 것이다.

레스토랑에서 잘려진 당근을 볼 때，나는 원뿔 곡선론을 생각하며 특유하게 잘려진 형태를 어떻게 묘사할지가 궁금하다.

물체에 대한 수학적 접근으로 사람들이 보고 만지고 느끼는 것이 놀랍지만 나에게는 신비로운 것이다.

어렸을 때 더 심각하게 수학을 접하였기를, 그리고 더 많이 공부하였기를 바란다.

만약 나에게 한 번 더 공부할 기회가 주어진다면，분명히 수학을 선택할 것이다.
