Old Fred had been a faithful Christian and was in hospital， near death. The family called their pastor to stand with them.

As the pastor stood next to the bed， the old man's condition appeared to deteriorate and he motioned frantically for something to write on. The pastor handed him a pen and a piece of paper， and the man used his last bit of energy to scribble a note， then he died. The pastor thought it best not to look at the note at that time， so he placed it in his jacket pocket.

At the funeral， he realized that he was wearing the same jacket that he was wearing when Fred died. He said， "You know Fred handed me a note just before he died. I haven't looked at it， but knowing Fred， I'm sure there's a word of inspiration there for us all." He opened the note and read，"Jerk， you're standing on my oxygen tube！"

목사가 노인의 침대 옆에 와서 서자 노인은 용태가 갑자기 나빠지면서 필기도구를 달라는 필사적인 손짓을 했다. 목사가 펜과 종이를 건네주자 노인은 마지막 힘을 다해서 뭔가를 기록하고 숨을 거뒀다. 목사는 그 메모가 그 자리에서 공개할 것이 아니라고 생각해서 그의 호주머니에 넣었다.

장례식에서 목사는 병원에서 받았던 그 메모가 생각났다. "여러분，고인은 운명하시기 직전 나에게 메모를 남겨주셨습니다. 아직 보지 않았습니다만 고인을 잘 아는 나는 그게 우리 모두를 감동시킬 내용일 것으로 확신합니다. " 그는 메모를 꺼내 읽었다. "이런 멍청아，내 산소 튜브를 밟고 있잖아！"
