Some friends and I were vacationing in Florida. Every day for a week， a woman with her meticulously groomed poodle passed us on the beach. Each time we saw her， she wore a different color swimsuit that matched the dog's ribbons and boots. But we couldn't figure out why such a well－groomed dog wore boots only on his hind legs. On our last day there， I put that question to the owner. She glared incredulously at me from behind her sunglasses and huffed， "Why would you put boots on his hands？"


친구 몇명하고 휴가차 플로리다에 갔다. 한 주 있는 동안 날마다 보게 된 건 정성 들여 치장한 푸들 강아지를 데리고 해변으로 나오는 여자였다. 그 여자는 볼 때마다 수영복 색깔이 달랐는데 그건 강아지의 리본과 부츠의 색상에 맞춘 것이었다. 그런데 알다가도 모를 것은 그토록 잘 치장한 강아지의 뒷발에만 부츠를 신긴 사실이었다. 마지막 날 난 개 임자에게 그 의문을 피력했다. 선글라스를 통해 나를 노려보는 여자는 참 답답하다는 표정이었다. "어째서 강아지의 손에다 부츠를 신긴단 말입니까？"하고 여자는 발끈하면서 대답하는 것이었다.
