The prosecutor called his witness to the stand-a grandmotherly woman.

"Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"

She responded, "I do know you. You''ve been a big disappontment to me. You cheat on your wife, talk about people behind their backs..."

The lawyer was stunned.

Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked.

"Do you know the defense attorney?"

"Yes I do. He too is a disappontment. He''s lazy and can''t build
normal relationship with anyone."

At this point the judge called both men to the bench and said with menace, "If either of you ask her if she knows me, you''ll
be jailed for contempt!"

검사가 불러낸 증인은 할머니였다.

"존즈부인, 나를 아십니까?"

"알고말고. 당신은 참 하찮은 사람이잖아. 부인을 속이고 남들에 관해 뒤에서 쑥덕대고..."

그는 어리벙벙했다.

어찌 할 바를 몰라 그는 저편을 가리키며 "저 변호사는 아십니까?"
하고 물었다.

"알아요. 저것도 하찮은 사람이지. 게으름뱅이이고 아무하고도 정상적인 관계를 이루지 못하는 사람이고..."

이때 판사는 두 사람을 곁으로 불러 협박조로 말했다.

"누구든 나를 아느냐고 묻는 날이면 모욕죄로 잡아 가둘거야!"라고 했다.
