Running to unseat Nathan Miller from the governorship of New York
State, Al Smith had to come up quickly during the last days of
the campaign with an answer to the boast that Miller had saved
the people of the state 40 million dollars through econonies.

Smith replied by saying that he did not have the time to make
an analysis of the Miller assertions, but he did wish to ask one
question :

"If it is true that Governor Miller saved the people 40 million
dollars, then what became of the money? Who got it?
Where did it go?" .

밀러로부터 뉴욕주지사자리를 빼앗으려고 출마하여 유세막판에 접어든
스미스는 비용을 아껴서 뉴욕주민들의 돈 4,000만달러를 건졌다고
자랑하는 밀러의 기세를 꺾기 위해 급히 어떤 수를 써야할 국면에 처했다.

스미스는 밀러가 주장하는 바를 분석해볼 시간이 없었으나 이것만은
따져야겠다고 했다.

"만약 유권자들의 돈 4,000달러를 쓰지 않고 절약한 것이라면 그 돈은
어찌 되었습니까.

누가 가지고 있는 겁니까.

어디로 갔다는 말입니까"
