A sedate English literary man was interviewed by the reporters on his arrival in New York. Before leaving London he was warned that the impetuous American reporters would probably try to make a fool of him. “Are you going to visit any night clubs during your stay here?” was the first question asked. “Are there any night clubs here?” parried the literary man. The next day he opened his morning paper. It said the visiting literary man was so curious about New York’s night life that his first question: “Are there any night clubs in New York?”

점잖은 영국 문단 인사가 뉴욕에 도착해 기자들에게 둘러싸였다. “여기 체류하는 동안 나이트클럽에 가보겠습니까?” 첫 질문이었다. 런던을 떠나기 전에 극성스러운 미국 기자들에게 농락당하기 쉬우니 조심하라는 이야기를 들은 터라 답변을 회피하기 위해 “이곳엔 나이트클럽이 있나요?”라고 반문했다. 이튿날 조간신문을 펄쳐봤다. 내방 중인 문인은 어찌나 뉴욕의 밤 모습이 궁금한지 “뉴욕엔 나이트클럽이 있나요?”라는 게 그의 첫 질문이었단다.
